How To Keep Gym Floor Covers Clean

Posted on: 2 September 2015

Whether your gym floor cover is being used as cushioning for tumbling or wrestling or merely as a way to protect the gym floor from being damaged by careless walkers, you are going to need to make sure that you are able to keep the tarp as clean and sanitary as possible. Even if people are not making direct contact with the tarp, they are going to be making direct contact with the floor that the tarp is covering. Here are some steps to keeping your gym floor covers clean.

1. Spot Clean Covers Every Day

Every day, you are going to want to make sure that you spot clean the covers. Many gym floor cover companies will have a brand of cleaner that they recommend, but if you are in a pinch, you can use normal dish washing detergent because it has the disinfectant and antibacterial properties that you need to keep people from getting sick, as well as the power to cut through grime and grease. To clean the area, apply a little bit of the cleaner or detergent to a paper towel. Rub the affected area until any stains are gone. If the area is small, allow it to dry on its own. Otherwise, use a second paper towel to dry the area so that no one slips.

2. Deep Clean Covers Every Few Days

You are going to want to thoroughly clean the covers every few days, unless they are being used for tumbling or wrestling, in which case you will want to deep clean them every day. To deep clean the covers, you are going to want to use a hose attached to a bucket that has the cleaning solution inside of it and thoroughly wet down the covers so that the liquid is able to seep into every nook and cranny. Wipe down any parts that are soaking wet and allow the covers to dry overnight. In the morning, have someone check for any wet spots and manually dry them before gym members start to arrive.

3. Clean the Undersides of the Covers Once a Week

Finally, you are going to want to clean the undersides of the covers once a week. This is because moisture from sweat and cleaning procedures can get underneath the mats and cause mold and mildew to form. Flip the cover over completely and apply the cleaning solution in the same way that you applied it to the top. Allow it to dry overnight. Also mop down the area underneath the mat with a cleaning solution that will not hurt the gym floor. Allow the floor to dry. Once both the mat and the floor are perfectly dry, replace the mat.
